maths week ireland

Scoil Mhuire Girls NS, Lucan, Republic of Ireland – Irish maths week

Maths Week was a really exciting time in Scoil Mhuire Girls’ N.S. Lucan this year. We decided to take on the Mangahigh Challenge for a second time and we were all looking forward to it. We were awarded 4th place nationally last year and we were surprised and delighted with that. However, the result was really just the culmination of a lot of fun and excitement engendered by the online games and challenges which the pupils took on.

This year, the pupils became even more engaged with Mangahigh. The teachers were fantastic! They set challenges for their pupils which reflected what they were teaching in class and they set homework to be done on Mangahigh. The pupils loved doing homework online and this, particularly in the case of the older pupils, brought out a competitive spirit which spurred them on to do more and more.

Each morning, I heard the pupils chatting as they passed my office. It was obvious to me that they were spending time working on the maths challenges and that they were really engrossed in the whole experience. It captivated our parents too! Our pupils told us that their mums and dads were spending time watching their progress and, of course, watching the leaderboard to see how our school was doing.

Our sets of laptops were used non-stop for Maths during maths week and “Mangahigh” was always on! There was huge demand among the classes to use the laptops and the pupils became quite adept at working at high speed, much to the amusement of any passing teachers or visitors!

As the clock ticked towards midnight in the final hours of the competition, most of our younger pupils were tucked up in their beds. I think our older pupils got special permission to stay up late and they played their hearts out. There was an air of pure delight in the playground next morning. 1st place was the reward for a lot of fun and games which Mangahigh provided to our pupils during this week-long competition.
